The six Azorean students who participated in the National Phase of MegaSprinter 2016/2017, held in Elvas on March 31 and April 1, achieved good results.
Vanessa Santos, a student at Castanheiro School (Female Beginners -B), was selected to the final of MegaSprinter (40 meters), achieving the highest score among the Azorean students; she won 8th place among 49 participants, with a time of 6.08s.
Also in MegaSprinter, Laura Barbeito, a student at Tomás de Borba Basic Education and Secondary School (Female Beginners - A) placed 12th among 43 participants in the semi-final with the best time of 6.54s at the qualifying stage. In turn, Samuel Gil, a student at Francisco Ferreira Drummond Basic Education School (Male Beginners - B), ranked 28th place among 47 participants with 6.10s.
In the Female Beginners category, Ana Goulart, a student at Madalena Basic Education and Secondary School, was placed 33rd with a time of 6.24s, while Sulpécia Gomes, a student at Vitorino Nemésio Secondary School, ranked 42nd place in a competition involving 48 participants.
Still in this category, Roberto Melo, a student at Horta Basic Education School, won 35th place among 43 participants with a time of 5.84s.
In the MegaSalto (jumping) competition, Samuel Gil, a student at Francisco Ferreira Drummond Basic Education School (Male Beginners - B), placed 9th among 22 competitors with a mark of 4.55 m. In turn, Laura Barbeito, a student at Tomás de Borba Basic Education and Secondary School (Female Beginners - A) jumped 3.40 m, ranking 16th place among 24 participants.
Vanessa Santos, a student at Castanheiro School (Female Beginners - B), placed 24th with the mark of 3.30 m and Sulpécia, a student at Vitorino Nemésio Secondary School (Female Beginners) jumped 4.42m and placed 19th among 25 participants. In turn, Roberto Melo, a student of Horta Basic Education School (Male Beginners), ranked 21st with the mark of 4.22m.
The six Azorean students who took part in the National Phase of MegaSprinter, an event involving the participation of 1,000 young athletes, were accompanied by teachers Cristina Santos (Madalena Basic Education and Secondary School) and Miguel Mendes (Horta Basic Education School).
This Azorean participation provided students with the opportunity to have a sports and educationally enriching experience.
The 2016/2017 edition of MegaSprinter held in the Azores involved the participation of 6,102 students, representing 34 schools: 4,868 in the School Phase, 1151 in the Island Phase, 77 in the Regional Phase and six in the National Phase.
