Alexandre Quintanilha presents lecture on "Emerging Challenges for Knowledge" in Angra do Heroísmo
Portuguese physicist and researcher Alexandre Quintanilha will deliver a lecture on "Emerging Challenges for Knowledge" at the invitation of the Regional Directorate for Education in Angra do Heroísmo next Wednesday, May 3.
This lecture, promoted under the REDA meetings, will be held in two sessions. The first is addressed to students and teachers and will take place at Tomás de Borba Basic Education and Secondary School at 2:15 PM, while the second is open to the public in general at the Main Hall of the Regional Secretariat for Education and Culture at 7 PM.
The REDA Meetings aim to foster the development of scientific and digital literacy among the educational community and the society in general, through workshops, panels and lectures intended to share experiences and knowledge in an informal context.
The first meeting was focused on creative writing and took place at Luís da Silva Ribeiro Public Library and Regional Archive on March 11, with the participation of Afonso Cruz.
REDA is an open digital educational resources platform developed under the Integrated Plan ProSucesso - Azores for Education; it is updated on a regular basis.
This support platform for teachers and students provides educational resources in various subjects, with special emphasis on Portuguese, Math, Physics and Chemistry, as well as useful links, webinars and sharing of experiences.
Currently, REDA provides 435 teaching resources and 89 suggestions for educational applications.
Alexandre Quintanilha holds a degree in Theoretical Physics from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, where he also received his doctorate in Solid State Physics. He worked for several years at the University of California, Berkeley, USA, where he headed the Centre for Environmental Studies. He held the position of assistant director at the Lawrence National Laboratory, Energy and Environment Section between 1983 and 1990 and the position of director of Biosphere Technology Study Centre from 1987 to 1990.
Alexandre Quintanilha is a professor at Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS) and holds the position of director of the Experimental Cytology Centre and coordinator of the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology of the University of Porto. He has published several articles in scientific journals worldwide, having been an editorial consultant to the Applied Physics Encyclopaedia.
