The Regional Secretary for the Sea, Science and Technology stated in Horta that there is an ongoing revolution in the aerospace industry, which will have many developments in the coming years, highlighting "the potential of the Azores to be part of this new industry."
Gui Menezes stressed that the Regional Government "welcomes the intention that has been shown by several companies regarding investments in the field of space in the Azores" towards the "creation of jobs and the economic development of the Region."
The Secretary for Science and Technology spoke at the end of a meeting with Deimos, a Portuguese aerospace engineering company, during which the feasibility of installing a space access platform in the Azores was under analysis.
According to Gui Menezes, the Azores are one of the European sites with the potential to launch satellites, especially microsatellites, but stressed that "there is still a long path to go" in this matter.
Meanwhile, the Regional Secretary assured that all environmental and safety aspects will be safeguarded, adding that there are aerospace technologies "compatible with the requirements" of the Region in these areas.
