Description Evergreen bushes or small trees, dioecious (with different male and female plants), smooth bark. Leaves are simple, pointed, to 6 x 5 cm. Flowers have white petals and fruits are round and red, to 8 mm. Found dispersed in ravines and in forests of Laurel, Azorian Juniperus and Australian Cheesewood; 250 to 570 m.

Description 20-50 cm, with erect stalk, highly branched in the upper part. Leaves of the basal rosette are simple, toothed, measuring to 30 x 10 cm. Flowers are yellow with up to 40 per capitulum. Achene measures around 4-5 mm, pappus to 7 mm, in two rows.

Description Tall deciduous shrub or small tree to 3.5 m with oblong, sharply pointed, serrated leaves of 3-5 cm. Flowers have white, pink or red petals, making a bell shaped corolla to 1.5 cm wide. Edible fruit is oval and dark blue. It is found on steep hillsides and in forests of Laurel and Azorean Juniperus, over 300 m.

Azorean Cherry Prunus azorica
Description Small tree or shrub, to 6 m. Young shoots brownish-red, with simple, sharply pointed elliptic leaves, to 12 x6 cm. Flowers with 5 white petals up to 5 mm. Black fruit fairly pointed. It’s an almost extinct plant of the remaining Laurel Forest, found in very shaded ravines and craters from 500 to 600 m.

Azorean Laurustinus Viburnum treleasei
Description Small evergreen shrub with more or less pubescent shoots. Leaves are simple, oval opposites; to 8 x 5 cm. Corolla is pinkish-white with 5 lobes to 1 cm in diameter. Fruit is a dark-blue drupe with 1 seed. Dispersed to rare on steep hillsides, ravines and craters, from 400 to 800 m.

Azorean Heather Erica azorica
Description Evergreen shrub or small tree, to 6 m. Simple needle-like leaves. Flowers in terminal panicles with green petals tinged with purple forming a belled corolla of 1.5-1.75 mm. Fruit is a dry capsule. It’s common on coastal cliffs, dry hillsides, recent lava flows and hedges, to 1,500 m. Old plants are rare due to illegal removal.

Description Evergreen dioecious tree or shrub, to 12 m. Dark green needle-like leaves, to 10 x 2 mm. Oval seeds, 3 per cone. In the past this was the dominant tree of the azorean native forest from 600 to 900 m. Currently, only a few individuals in untouched areas remain.

Description Small dioecious tree or bush, to 6 m. Simple elliptic sharply pointed leaves, to 15 x 8 cm. Axillary flower clusters. 4 to 5 petals of pale yellow. Black pulpy berries, with 2 to 3 seeds, of 1 cm diameter. Dispersed to rare in ravines, hedgerows, Laurel and Azorean Juniperus forests, generally from 500 to 700 m.

Description Evergreen tree or shrub, to 8 m, with pale, smooth bark. Leaves are opposite, simple and lanceolate, to 6 x 3 cm. Short axillary flower clusters, white corolla with 4 lobes. Dark blue oval berries, to 1.5 cm. Locally common, but threatened due to cutting and creation of pastures for cattle. Found on cliffs, in ravines and forests of Faya Trees and Australian Cheesewood, to 750 m.
