Regional Implementing Decree no. 40/91/A of 25 November created S. Jorge Museum. In addition to general museum duties, S. Jorge Museum is responsible for cataloguing, preserving and disseminating sources of a monographical, ethnographical and historic nature, for promoting activities of renowned cultural interest, for cooperating with local government and other institutions in the development of action plans in the culture field, for collaborating with schools in educational or educational/scientific actions.
It represents on the island and supports the Regional Directorate for Culture.
