Regional Implementing Decree no. 40/91/A of 25 November alters the name of Santa Maria Ethnographical Centre to that of Island Museum.
Regional Implementing Decree no. 36/2000/A is published on 7 December 2000.
Regional Implementing Decree no. 13/2001/A of 7 November establishes the reorganisation of the external services of the Regional Directorate for Culture. The basic duties of Island Museums are to collect, preserve and exhibit the material testimony of man and his environment, for the purposes of study, preservation and leisure. They also have the important mission of interacting with the community or public and private institutions, favouring work with schools, and employing entertainment and cultural activities to implement that interaction.
Island Museums are also responsible for representing the Regional Directorate for Culture, supporting its initiatives on the islands on which they are located and also supporting that Directorate's activities plan. Another responsibility of an Island Museum is to issue opinions on applications for the support of cultural activities to be held on the respective island.
