The President of the Government visited today the protection works of the embankment at Lajes das Flores Port, destroyed by Hurricane Lorenzo in October 2019, an emergency intervention representing an investment of about 22 million Euros.
This visit was part of the round of contacts and visits that Vasco Cordeiro is making on all islands of the archipelago for the resumption of economic activity in the Region, following the first phase of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
At Lajes Port, the President of the Government had the opportunity to learn about the progress of the protection works of the embankment, which will function as a breakwater, thus preventing overwashing in the port activity area.
The construction project for the new Lajes das Flores Port is currently at the preliminary study phase, after its total destruction by Hurricane Lorenzo that caused damage estimated at about 330 million Euros. A significant part affected various port structures, with the National Government committed to supporting 85 percent of that amount.
On Wednesday, after arriving on the island of Flores, Vasco Cordeiro also visited the works for the recovery of the damage caused by Hurricane Lorenzo in the improvement works under way at Poças Port in Santa Cruz das Flores, corresponding to an investment of about 1.8 million Euros.
These works began in February and are intended, after a first phase of restoring the conditions necessary for the normal progress of the work, to restore part of the works already under way that were destroyed by the storm.
During this visit to Flores Island, the President of the Government also met with the Mayor of Santa Cruz, José Carlos Mendes, and the Mayor of Lajes, Luís Maciel, as part of the round of contacts taking place on all islands of the Region, following the resumption of economic activity in the Region.
In the last few weeks, Vasco Cordeiro began a round of visits and meetings to address areas such as education, fisheries, agriculture, tourism, the economy and employment.
On Tuesday, the President of the Government visited Terceira and, on the following day, Corvo, where he also met with the mayors of both islands. There are scheduled visits to other islands of the archipelago in coming days.
