National Government's proposal for RTP/RDP Açores includes "disturbing aspects," says Vasco Cordeiro
The proposal presented by the National Government for the future of public radio and television service in the Azores includes "disturbing aspects," warned the President of the Government, who pledged to decide on this proposal within a month and after careful analysis.
"In a first analysis, the Government of the Azores is concerned about this proposal because it does not provide a response to the actions that should be done at the Regional Centre of RTP-Açores. It does not take into consideration the responsibilities that should be fully taken by the State in order to ensure the effective operation of this public service in the Azores," stated Vasco Cordeiro.
Speaking after a meeting with the Minister in the Cabinet of the Prime Minister and for Regional Development, Miguel Poiares Maduro, the President of the Government noted that the proposed separation between the public information service and the production of contents by a different company is one of his main concerns.
"Another aspect that concerns us is the situation of workers. This proposal cannot be the only way to solve the problems that might be related to the situation of workers," warned Vasco Cordeiro. The government official added that the Public Television and Radio Service fee (CAV) paid in the Azores is another issue to be addressed.
After the meeting with Poiares Maduro, the President of the Government conveyed his concern regarding the heritage that is currently under the administration of the Regional Centre of RTP/RDP as well as the regional archives.
"The State has made several investments in radio and television services across the country. However, if we want to revitalise RTP Açores in order to help it overcoming its slow development, we are faced with a solution that does not seem to meet the goals designed for this regional service," said the President of the Government.
For Vasco Cordeiro, "there is something in this proposal that is hardly understandable and acceptable for the Regional Government, which is the adoption of this proposal to solve the financial problems of RTP."
According to the President of the Government, there is still one aspect that remains essential: the State has the obligation to assure public radio and television service in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, being an issue that remains open.
Vasco Cordeiro also considered that this matter requires the consultation of other entities in the Region, including political parties represented at the Parliament, with the aim of taking a position that represents the Autonomous Region of the Azores.
"While preparing our position on this proposal, we will take this aspect into consideration," assured the President of the Government.
