Outcome of U.S. elections means "careful and close attention" on matters of interest to the Region, says Vasco Cordeiro
The President of the Government stated today that Donald Trump's victory in the U.S. presidential elections requires the need for a "careful and closer attention" in regard to certain matters of interest to the Region.
"Right now, we should wait. During the electoral campaign, the then candidate and now President-elect expressed certain positions and views that, at least, call for a very careful and close attention," said Vasco Cordeiro.
According to Vasco Cordeiro, one of the key areas of this relation concerns the future emigration policy to be followed by Donald Trump's Administration, taking into account the fact that the Azores have a large emigrant community in the east and west coasts of the United States.
"We must wait for the names that will make up the future Administration and how it will be run, since the U.S. political system holds a very significant part of their decision-making power and influence in the Congress," said the government official.
Asked about the future of Lajes Air Base, following the presidential elections of last Tuesday, the President of the Government said it was "premature to make any consideration on this matter."
"At this point, it is not suitable to speculate on any type of position or expectation regarding this matter," said Vasco Cordeiro.
