President of the Government confident in the importance of logistics hub for the economy of the Azores
After a meeting with the Angra do Heroísmo Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, the President of the Government mentioned the importance of the creation of a logistics hub in the Azores that draws advantage of the changes in logistics circuits occurring worldwide.
"This project to be implemented in Praia da Vitória is quite interesting; however it requires hard work and some speed in its approach. This meeting has resulted in the identification of several aspects that will allow us to move forward with this project," said Vasco Cordeiro after the audience held in Angra do Heroísmo.
The President of the Government stressed the major changes that are taking place in the international logistics circuits, particularly through the expansion of the Panama Canal. In this context, he considered that this is a challenge the Azores must seize, using the potential of their strategic location in the Atlantic.
Regarding the decision of not proceeding with the construction of a cruise pier in Angra do Heroísmo, Vasco Cordeiro said the Regional Governments, as always, acknowledges the right and legitimacy of those who disagree with this decision.
"In this case, the Government wants to safeguard the conditions to further improve the Porto das Pipas in terms of inter-island transport, especially in the maritime links in the Central Group Islands, and the role of this infrastructure in the promotion of theme cruises," added the President of the Government.
After the audience with the Mayor of Angra do Heroísmo City Hall, Vasco Cordeiro announced that the Regional Port Authorities has received instructions to proceed with the project for the construction of a roll-on/roll-off ramp at Porto das Pipas, an investment that should be concluded during this legislative period.
