The President of the Government received today in Ponta Delgada the Operational Commander of the National Security Guard (GNR), Lieutenant-General Nuno Pires da Silva, at an audience to discuss various matters pertaining to the development of the GNR mission in the Region.
After the meeting, held at the Santana Palace, Vasco Cordeiro stated that, under the collaboration with GNR, the Government has already supported the purchase of vehicles and equipment, as was also the case with PSP (Public Security Police).
"The phase for the allocation of support for the purchase of equipment and vehicles, amounting to 200 thousand Euros, has been concluded, even though this is the State's responsibility," said the President of the Government to journalists.
According to him, the Government has now decided on the granting of aid to the recovery of the GNR premises on the island of Graciosa
Regarding the recruitment of human resources to the Azores, Vasco Cordeiro mentioned that, as the archipelago is a dispersed territory, "the State has a special responsibility to provide the resources deemed necessary and sufficient to carry out its duties."
After stating he was aware that others areas of the country also need human resources in security forces, the President of the Government considered that "more must be done" in this area.
"But there is no doubt that, with the means available, the security forces carry out their duties in the Azores to the best of their ability," noted Vasco Cordeiro.
