The President of the Government welcomed the Minister of the Sea in Ponta Delgada, where they met to analyse several matters of interest to the Region, such as the Sea Observatory and the installation of weather radars in the three island groups of the archipelago.
“I am confident in the results of this meeting, namely with regard to key areas that are under the administration of the Minister of the Sea and that are particularly relevant for our Region,” said Vasco Cordeiro.
After the meeting with Ricardo Serrão Santos, the President of the Government stated that, as far as the Atlantic Observatory is concerned, it is a “process that is moving forward to congregate wills and foster partnerships, which can further reinforce the role and importance of the Azores in the research, knowledge and science concerning the Atlantic.”
Regarding the weather radars, Vasco Cordeiro underlined that, in the case of Terceira island, this equipment is expected to start operating soon.
“In the case of São Miguel Island, the project is already concluded and we are now moving forward with the subsequent steps to carry out this investment.
As for the island of Flores, the work has also begun, which will now progress to assessment of the location and the development of the entire project for the installation of this radar," said the government official.
"This is an investment that the National Government has made in our Region and that is of paramount importance for the Azores and the safety of the Azoreans," stressed the President of the Government.
The Fisheries sector was another matter under analysis at this meeting, not only in the scope of the current Community framework, whose implementation period will end soon, but also in terms of the prospects for the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union, said the government official.
“I am very confident in the results of this meeting, of this visit that the Minister of the Sea is making to the Azores and of this partnership work that has been developed between the Region and the National Government regarding matters pertaining to knowledge research and Fisheries,” concluded the President of the Government.
