Programme for construction and refurbishment of schools represents investment of nearly 160 million Euros, says Vasco Cordeiro
The President of the Government visited today the refurbishment works of Padre Mauricio de Freitas School in Santa Cruz das Flores. They are included in the programme for the construction and improvement of school buildings that is underway in the Region, representing a global investment of about 160 million Euros.
"The investment in this school is not isolated and falls within a series of investments that have been made and are being made in several regional schools. This is a programme that will represent an investment of more than 160 million Euros in school infrastructures in a time frame of eight years," said Vasco Cordeiro.
The President of the Government spoke to journalists on the first day of the statutory visit to the island, after visiting the works taking place at Flores Basic Education and Secondary School, which amount to nearly one million Euros.
Since 2012, the Government has carried out several works: the expansion of Angra do Heroísmo Basic Education School, the construction of the Special Education Building of Rabo de Peixe Basic Education School, the 1st phase of the works of Horta Basic Education School, the expansion of Domingos Rebelo Secondary School, the new Velas Basic Education and Secondary School, the new Ribeira Grande Basic Education School and the new Lajes do Pico Basic Education and Secondary School.
In addition, the construction works of the new Calheta Basic Education and Secondary School and the refurbishment works of Canto da Maia Basic Education School are currently in the final phase.
Moreover, the refurbishment works of Capelas Basic Education School have already started, which will be followed by the interventions in Rabo de Peixe and Arrifes Basic Education Schools.
Regarding Flores Basic Education School, the first phase, currently underway, consists of solving problems related to the functionality and comfort of the building. In turn, the second phase, due to start soon, includes a structural intervention.
According to the President of the Government, the project for the second phase is already under preparation, followed by its implementation. It will focus on the structural component of four classrooms, which date back to the early 1990s.
"This school also stands out for its results. In the final exams of 2018, it stood out in the subjects of Portuguese and Mathematics. In both cases, the average results were above the regional average. In the case of the Portuguese exam, the average results were even higher than the national average and, in the case of Mathematics, the average results are the same as that registered nationwide," said Vasco Cordeiro.
