Regional Government starts Monday statutory visit to São Jorge Island

The Government of the Azores starts Monday the statutory visit to the island of São Jorge, during which the President of the Government, among other events, will open the Judo Training Centre in Velas and chair the ceremony that marks the reopening of the Finance Department in the municipality of Calheta.

The programme of this statutory visit to São Jorge, as has been customary since the previous legislative period, also includes a moment when members of the Azorean Government will be available to receive the local population. This initiative aims to reinforce the Government's proximity policy with the Azorean population.

The Azorean Government arrives on São Jorge Island on Monday afternoon and, shortly thereafter, Vasco Cordeiro chairs the opening ceremony of the Judo Training Centre, a modern sports structure that involved an investment of around one million euros. The day concludes with the regular meeting of the Government of the Azores with the Island Council.

On Tuesday morning, the President of the Government visits the remodelling and expansion works of Calheta Health Centre and presides over the unveiling of the National Health Accreditation Programme plaque at this health unit. He will then visit the construction site of the new building of Calheta Basic Education and Secondary School.

During the afternoon, Vasco Cordeiro chairs the reopening of the Finance Department in the municipality of Calheta. The second day of the Government's statutory visit to São Jorge ends with the meeting of the Council of the Government.

On Wednesday morning, the President of the Government visits the Church of Santa Barbara in Manadas, which began to be built in 1510 and is classified as a National Monument; the rehabilitation works are already concluded.

The programme of this statutory visit also includes, as usual, visits by members of the Government to various ongoing investments as well as meetings with various entities of São Jorge Island.

The signing of letters of commitment for elderly residential care with the João Inácio Sousa Nursing Home in Velas and with the "Santa Casa da Misericórdia" of Calheta, the reinforcement of water supply system of Santo Amaro and the presentation of previous studies on the redevelopment of viewpoints are some of the initiatives included in the visit programme.

Among other initiatives, the Regional Government's visit includes the presentation of the second phase of the project for the improvement of the Rural Longitudinal North Road and the workshop on innovation in the regional public administration; the opening session will be attended by the Vice-President of the Government.
