The President of the Regional Government announced in Ponta Delgada the opening of 135 teaching vacancies in regional schools for the next school year, as part of the reinforcement strategy that has been implemented in this area over the past few years.
Between 2015 and 2019, the Government opened 756 teaching vacancies.
If we take into account those that will be launched today - the opening of 135 vacancies for the next school year - we are talking about the opening of more than 890 vacancies in this period of time," said Vasco Cordeiro.
The President of the Government spoke at the signing ceremony of the protocol for the extension of the "AaZ - Reading Better, Knowing More" programme to Azorean schools, which is under the responsibility of Teresa e Alexandre Soares dos Santos – Education Initiative.
According to the President of the Government, this increase in the number of teaching vacancies in regional schools has, thus, been achieved over several years, despite the reduction in the number of students in the Azores from around 42 thousand to around 37 thousand between 2015 and 2019.
The protocol signed today provides for an intervention with elementary school students with reading and writing difficulties, based on individualised support. The project will start in the current school year with 1st and 2nd form classes at Ginetes Basic Education School and Santa Maria Basic Education and Secondary School.
