Vasco Cordeiro invites members of the Regional Assembly for a meeting on Lajes Air Base process
The President of the Government of the Azores invited the Standing Committee on General Policy at the Legislative Assembly for a meeting intended to inform its members about the situation regarding the restructuring process of the U.S. military presence at Lajes Air Base.
The invitation was formalised by a letter that was recently sent to the President of the legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores. In his letter, Vasco Cordeiro reminded the "Regional Government's attention and commitment to this process."
According to the letter addressed to Ana Luísa Luís, "this is justified not only by the important historical and diplomatic relations between Portugal and the United States of America, but also by the relevance of the geostrategic position of the Azores. It is especially important by the economic and social importance brought by the presence of U.S. military forces on the island of Terceira and in the Azores over these the last six decades.
