Vasco Cordeiro meets Commissioner Elisa Ferreira with future of Cohesion Policy on the agenda
The President of the Government participates Thursday in a meeting with the European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, under the "Alliance for Cohesion" initiative, which the Azores joined in January 2018.
Vasco Cordeiro participates in this meeting, which will take place at the Committee of the Regions in Brussels, as President of the Conference of Peripheral and Maritime Regions of Europe (CPMR), an interregional cooperation organisation that encompasses 160 regions from 25 European countries, congregating 200 million citizens.
This meeting with Commissioner Elisa Ferreira takes place at a time of great importance for the regions, given that the decision phase on the next Community funds and the definition of the framework for European policies for the 2021-2027 period is coming near.
In January 2018, the President of the Government signed the Declaration "#CohesionAlliance," an initiative promoted by the Committee of the Regions, thus formalising the accession of the Azores to a coalition of European regions and entities that demand the existence of a strong and effective Cohesion Policy in the Community budget for the post 2020 period.
Among other things, this Declaration defends that the cohesion policy should be the main long-term investment tool for Europe's regions. In fact, it should support growth and employment at local and regional level as well as to promote innovative solutions t for issues such as climate change, energy transition and social inclusion.
Vasco Cordeiro took over, for the first time, the presidency of CPMR in Sweden in September 2014, having been unanimously reelected at the General Assemblies held by this body in Ponta Delgada in 2016 and in Funchal in 2018.
