Vasco Cordeiro sends letter to U.S. Congress warning of the impact of the end of DACA programme
The President of the Government announced today that he will send a letter to U.S. Congressmen and Senators expressing his bewilderment and concern about the U.S. Administration's decision to end the protection programme for undocumented young immigrants.
"This is a decision made by the U.S. Government that causes apprehension and concern due to the impact it may have on Azorean emigrant communities and their descendants," said Vasco Cordeiro.
Asked by journalists about President Donald Trump's decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), created by former President Barack Obama, Vasco Cordeiro said he will send a letter to the Portuguese American Caucus Congressmen at the House of Representatives as well as to the Senators who make up the Friends of Portugal group.
With this initiative, the President of the Government intends to warn of the impact of this measure, not only from the perspective of emigrant communities but also from the perspective of host communities, "since many of these young people follow a path that contributes to the development of each one of these communities."
"This action, which does not exclude other measures that the Government of the Azores is assessing, is essential to demonstrate with decision-makers at the U.S. Congress the importance we attach to this matter and the seriousness of this matter for the Azorean communities, "said Vasco Cordeiro.
