The President of the Government stated today that the study of the working group of Horta City Hall on the expansion of Faial Airport runway is an important aspect in the ongoing work to improve air accessibility to this island.
Vasco Cordeiro spoke to journalists in Ponta Delgada after receiving, in audience, the Mayor of Horta City Hall. During the meeting, José Leonardo Silva delivered to the Government the study on the project for the expansion of the runway.
According to Vasco Cordeiro, the Azorean Government shares the same position of the local authority not only in regard to the expansion of the runway but also in regard to the ultimate goal of improving air accessibility of Faial Island to further strengthen the island's economy in the area of tourism.
"We must bear in mind that there is already a growth in tourism on Faial island, but this should not distract us from the need to improve the conditions that may lead to the sustainability of this growth," said the President of the Government.
Vasco Cordeiro also reiterated that the Government is working on other issues related to the improvement of air accessibility, not only on the island of Faial but also in the Region in global terms with the aim of increasing the attractiveness of the air routes to the archipelago.
"This work is underway and, in this context, the contribution provided by Horta City Hall is also an important fact," assured the President of the Government.
