Visit by the President of the Republic "clearly exceeded expectations," says Vasco Cordeiro
The President of the Government of the Azores stated that the visit of the President of the Republic to all western and central group islands of the archipelago, which ended today on São Jorge, clearly exceeded expectations.
"I think I speak for all the Azoreans who have had the opportunity to meet the President of the Republic and say this visit clearly exceeded expectations," said Vasco Cordeiro, who made an overall assessment of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa's visit to the islands of Corvo, Flores, Terceira, Pico, Graciosa, Faial and São Jorge.
Speaking to journalists, the President of the Government considered that this visit allowed the President of the Republic to update his knowledge of the islands already visited, but it also provided an opportunity for the Regional Government to present a series of relevant aspects to the Region as well as its position about them.
"It was a visit that, above all, in those areas where there might have been the appearance of a different opinion, clearly had the advantage of reaffirming the freedom, the openness and the understanding for the expression of these positions," said Vasco Cordeiro.
Speaking on the island of São Jorge, the President of the Government stressed that, regarding all these matters, the Regional Government restates its commitment to search for the best solution for the Region, because, "as the President of the Republic said, the best for the Azores is also the best for Portugal."
Asked about the question on the office of the Representative of the Republic, Vasco Cordeiro assured that "this is not a matter of people, it is not a matter of personal characteristics."
"It is a question that has to do with the conception and the work that is being done on how, four decades after the consecration of Autonomy, the maintenance of this office can make sense or not," said the President of the Government.
