The first market for organic products, built from scratch in the Azores and in the country, will open in Praia da Vitória in September.
The announcement was made today during the visit made by Regional Director for Agricultural Development and the Mayor of Praia da Vitória to the works in progress.
As Joaquim Pires told journalists, this is "an important investment and a meaningful partnership, in which the Regional Government is honoured to have collaborated" for its importance in the development of agriculture and the well-being of consumers.
Furthermore, the Regional Director stressed that this market represents the consolidation of "a key link in this chain of organic products", which is the area of marketing.
"We have carried out a thorough and well developed work on the ground. Organic farming has been practised on the island of Terceira and other islands for sometime; the farmers who dedicate themselves to this type of farming are certified and there are also other farmers who are converting to organic farming. Nevertheless, "it was important cover the area of marketing," underlined the Regional Director.
Joaquim Pires congratulated the partners of this initiative: BioAzórica cooperative, G-Questa environmental association and Praia da Vitória City Hall; the latter took the initiative to move forward with the project. The government official highlighted the fact that the City Hall embraced the idea, contrary to "others who advocate the need for promoting and diversifying organic farming, but who do nothing."
The market for organic products will be located downtown next to the "Clube Naval" and the green area. This infrastructure will include cold storage facilities, a kitchen for demonstrations, a shop and an office.
