Innovation, knowledge and research are key to success of regional agricultural production, says Regional Director for Agriculture
The Regional Director for Agriculture highlighted today the role of innovation, science, knowledge and research as key aspects to the success and affirmation of agricultural production in the Azores.
"Research and innovation policies are fundamental to production and food sectors. Therefore, the role of the University of the Azores and of all the research done in the Region is crucial to the success and affirmation of agricultural production," said José Élio Ventura.
The Regional Director spoke at the opening of the conference entitled "Iodine and Selenium in Milk: Environment and Health," an event organised by Unileite and the University of the Azores. It brought together researchers and agents in the agricultural sector to discuss the importance of iodine in milk and its relevance to consumer health as well as business strategies.
In his speech, José Élio Ventura stated that all the research work is based on the excellence of the Azores milk. It should be a source of pride and we must seize its full potential by "adding value in every drop, in each factory and in every opportunity."
"If we work together - producers, processing industry and science - we can make real progress and conquer the market by valuing what is ours," stressed the Regional Director.
José Élio Ventura pointed out that future challenges can be easily addressed if there is a "reinforcement of knowledge among agents themselves." He added that the Regional Government has already approved support amounting to 1.2 Euros for 12 doctorate and postdoctoral fellowships in the field of Agriculture.
According to José Élio Ventura, the use of science, new technologies and knowledge "can help to increase the efficiency, effectiveness and competitiveness of the dairy industry and, thus, boost the profitability of farms and the income of farmers."
