Production of proteas generated great economic dynamics, wealth and employment, says Regional Director for Agriculture
The Regional Director for Agriculture emphasised the great dynamics generated by the production of proteas in the Azores not only in terms of stems exported abroad, but also in terms of employment creation and wealth generation.
"Regarding 2017 and 2018, we register a growth between 20 and 30%, both in terms of stems shipped and turnover," José Élio Ventura said, adding that "the production area also increased four times, that is, from 15 to 75 hectares."
José Élio Ventura spoke during a visit to FRUTER - Association of Fruit, Vegetable and Flower Producers of Terceira Island. On the occasion, he mentioned that the association's turnover in the production of proteas increased from one million Euros in 2017 to 1.2 million Euros in 2018.
This area absorbs a significant number of workers, especially in a period of greater availability of labour force, for the performance of several activities such as flower arrangements as well as the harvesting, preparation and packaging of flowers for export. Hence, it is a job opportunity that complements other seasonal economic activities, as is the case of the agricultural, tourism and restaurant sectors.
Additionally, FRUTER has been working to create mechanisms for the processing of proteas, through computer systems, with the aim of exporting them not only to the European market but also to the Chinese market.
The Regional Director also pointed out that, under the amendments to POSEI 2019, the Government has stipulated specific support for the packaging of proteas, amounting to five cents per stem. The aid is paid in accordance with the quantity of stems sold with a size equal to or greater than 40 centimetres.
The visit to FRUTER was an opportunity to become better acquainted with the investments made and future needs. In this regard, José Élio Ventura informed that the Regional Government has already approved the 150 thousand-Euro application submitted by this association for the construction of a new warehouse in a 140 square metre area to absorb the increased production of proteas on the island.
