The forests of the region are of considerable value to timber production.
This situation has allowed forestry industries to develop, which contribute to the supply of regional markets and to the export of significant amounts of wood to other markets.
Forest areas are also of similar importance to the conservation of soils and the water cycle, contributing to improved cultural and landscape management and to the protection of the environment.
Thus, in order to ensure that the exploitation of forestry resources is done sustainably, monitoring and control measures relative to these activities have been adopted:
a) Felling, removal, transplant, destruction or damage of trees or tree clusters deemed to be of particular economic, botanical, landscape or environmental importance;
b) The clearing of uncultivated land for growing pasture or for other agricultural purposes;
c) Transforming forested land into land for any other use;
d) The introduction of species previously non-existent in the region;
e) The manufacture of vegetable charcoal on uncultivated land or forested land;
The practice of all the above-stated activities requires the prior authorisation of the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Fishing, so the Forestry Service of the respective island must be consulted in order to obtain information and any necessary permits.
