The Institute for Food and Agricultural Markets, created in the Autonomous Region of the Azores in 1986, is a regional public body with legal personality and administrative, financial and assets autonomy which is integrated in the Regional Administration under the jurisdiction of the Regional Directorate for Agriculture and Forestry. Its action comprises all islands of the Archipelago.
The Institute for Food and Agricultural Markets is responsible for the implementation of the verification and monitoring operations regarding the conditions for granting Community, national and regional support, for the monitoring of the development of the agricultural markets in terms of commercialisation and processing of the agricultural and livestock products, as well as for the implementation of the regional policy under some quality schemes comprised by the applicable regulation.
Furthermore, the Institute for Food and Agricultural Markets administers and manages the regional slaughter network and the classification of milk production in order to ensure the public supply of milk in accordance with the hygiene and food safety rules in force.
