The statistics on waste production and management in the Azores have been reported to the Azores Regional Statistics Service (SREA) through a protocol between the Regional Directorate for the Environment and the national statistics agency. The SREA is the main statistical agency in the Region and the delegation of the National Statistics Institute (INE)
The information collected by the Regional Information System on Waste (SRIR) has been validated, certified and compiled in accordance with the criteria stipulated on Regulations (CE) no. 2150/2002 for the compliance with the reporting to EUROSTAT.
The statistics on urban waste regarding the years of 2010 and 2011 were officially submitted in the month of July. The analysis of the information on sectoral waste is currently taking place. One should note that the production of urban waste grew from 146,092 tonnes to 146,553 tonnes in the last two years, corresponding to an average of 1.6 kilograms of waste per inhabitant per year.
The information compiled is the result of a legal compliance of Azorean companies producing waste, regional operators and managing entities with the General Scheme for the Prevention and Management of Waste in the Azores (Regional Legislative Decree no. 29/2011/A of November 16). These entities annually report data on waste production and management, thus contributing to the creation of a regional strategy for the prevention and management of waste.
