The project of the Azores Hydrometeorological Network was the winner of the "Green Project Awards Portugal" in the Information Technology category, as announced today during a ceremony held at the Champalimaud Foundation in Lisbon.
This project is promoted by the Azorean Government and managed by the Regional Secretariat for Natural Resources, through the Regional Directorate for the Environment; its development also involved the collaboration of Global EDA. The initiative won a national award, whose purpose is to mobilise society for sustainable development.
For the sixth consecutive year, the Portuguese Environment Agency, Quercus and GCI, the entities sponsoring the Green Project Awards Portugal, have recognised the projects that have excelled throughout the year regarding the implementation of the best practices in sustainable development.
The Azores Hydrometeorological Network consists of stations that measure precipitation and the flow of lakes and streams. The information registered is used, for example, in the warnings on the movement of slopes issued by CIVISA (Volcanological and Seismic Observatory).
This network is comprised of weather stations, which allow to obtain data on wind intensity and direction, evaporation, humidity, precipitation, temperature, the level and temperature of the water dish; rainfall stations that record the amount of precipitation, wind intensity and direction; hydrometric stations installed on permanent watercourses (streams) and lakes that register information on the variations of the water level, from which the water flow is determined.
