Azores' strategy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions does not involve cattle reduction, says João Ponte
The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Forestry stated that the Azores have their own strategy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, so the measures announced by the Minister of the Environment in the agricultural sector will not be implemented in the Region under the Path to Carbon Neutrality for 2050.
"Regarding the measures already announced by the Minister of the Environment, namely those concerning livestock, I can assure that these measures will not be applied in the Region because we have our own Government," said João Ponte.
The government official stated that the reduction of carbon dioxide emission to the atmosphere in the Azores will be achieved through energy measures instead of cattle reduction.
The Azorean strategy is included in the Regional Plan for Climate Change, a document that has already been submitted to the Legislative Assembly.
The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Forestry also stressed that the Azores have an extensive farming system with high environmental concerns.
"Naturally, the National Government's general concerns on the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions are also shared by the Azorean Government, so much so that the situation in the Region is much better than that in Mainland Portugal," said João Ponte.
