Biodiversity Kit aims to raise the awareness of children for nature conservation
The Regional Secretariat for Natural Resources is distributing the "Azores Biodiversity Kit" freely among elementary schools in an initiative that aims to raise the awareness of students for nature preservation and conservation.
The distribution of this innovative teaching resource is being carried out on the island of São Miguel through the "Ecoteca" (Environmental Awareness Raising Centre) of the Island Natural Park, covering a total of 71 schools and 6,758 students.
The kit includes a film on the islands' natural features, a children's tale, a bag with seeds of endemic species, posters of the Azores' ecosystems, jigsaw puzzles featuring protected species and a story apron. In addition to the contents that make up the kit, it also includes some suggestions for educational activities.
The "Biodiversity Kit" was created to promote environmental education in accordance to the Regional Strategy for the Conservation of Biodiversity in the Azores - "Mais Endémicas." Being a contribution to the Regional Plan for Environmental Education and Awareness Raising (PRESAA), the kit was fully designed and produced by the Department of Nature Conservation of Azorina S.A., with illustrations and design by Bruno Rafael.
