"Ecotecas" and Azores Geopark celebrate World Earth Day and National Day of Geological Heritage
The Regional Secretariat for Natural Resources, through the network of "Ecotecas" (Environmental Awareness Raising Centres) in partnership with the Azores Geopark, celebrates the World Earth Day and National Day of the Geological Heritage starting today and throughout the week.
Several activities will be take place across the archipelago in the Island Natural Parks, which promote a specific agenda to support schools under the "School Park" programme. These activities include the organisation of theme sessions on geological heritage and field trips to several geosites.
The São Miguel Natural Park, through its "Ecoteca," participated today in the presentation of a children's book published by the Azores Geopark titled as "Guia Infantil – Vulcões dos Açores" (Children's Guide - Azores Volcanoes" at Água de Pau Basic Education School.
This book aims to disseminate geological heritage and convey geology concepts to young Azoreans. The Azores Geopark will offer a copy to all regional elementary and middle schools, Public and Municipal Libraries, Environmental Interpretation Centres and the Science Centres that are partners of the Azores Geopark.
Throughout the school year, the Island Natural Parks have responded to requests made by the schools that have scheduled field trips in accordance to the contents studied in class.
On Tuesday, the Faial Natural Park will organise a Visit to Capelinhos Volcano Geosite for junior high school students. This activity features a presentation on the Azores Geopark, followed by a visit to the Interpretation Centre and a climb to the volcano with geo-interpretation.
