The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Forestry stated today that the Regional Government works on a daily basis to build a better future for agriculture. In this context, he highlighted the investment of more than 200 thousand Euros in the improvement of Lomba da Cruz agricultural road, located in the Agrarian Planning Perimeter (POA) of Ponta Delgada Dairy Basin, which will improve the working conditions of farmers and the competitiveness of farms.
“The main goal of the Regional Government is to always to do more and better to help developing a strategic sector of the regional economy. This work is another example of the work we are doing to help creating more confidence in the future,” said João Ponte at the presentation of the project to improve this agricultural road located in the parish of Santo António.
The government official stressed that the Government will invest 16.2 million Euros in agricultural roads throughout the archipelago in the current legislative term, nine million Euros more than in the previous term. This increased investment corresponds to more interventions, which will provide better access to farms and directly contribute to the reduction of production costs.
“More than the size of the infrastructure itself and the amount of the investment, it is important to highlight the fact that public resources are effectively supporting farmers and contributing to the growth and modernisation of the agricultural sector so that it can have the indispensable tools to be increasingly sustainable," stressed João Ponte. In this regard, he ensured that the Regional Government has been and will always be on the side of farmers, helping them to progress and develop the sector.
The intervention in Lomba da Cruz agricultural road, covering an extension of about one kilometre, will benefit almost two dozen farms in the parish of Santo António, municipality of Ponta Delgada.
“This is a project directed towards the future. It responds to the needs of farmers in this area of São Miguel Island and also demonstrates that Regional Government is fulfilling the commitment made to farmers, their representative organisations and the Parish Council," noted João Ponte.
