The Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and Forestry, through the Regional Institute of Agrarian Planning (IROA), has concluded the contract work for the construction of a dam, a reservoir and a water distribution point in Ribeira do Meio on the island of São Jorge. This intervention represented an investment of thousand Euros.
This contract work, included in the Regional Public Works Charter, benefits sixty farms and covers an area of 106 hectares.
The work is of significant importance for agricultural activity in the villages of Santo Antão and Topo, municipality of Calheta, insofar as it reinforces the competitiveness of agricultural companies by reducing farm costs and improving producers’' working conditions.
In 2018, IROA will invest about 95 thousand Euros in water supply interventions on the island of São Jorge with the construction of another two reservoirs in Biscoitos and Bardinhos, which corresponds to an overall capacity of 500 cubic metres.
