Photography contest and "tertúlia" mark 56th anniversary of the eruption of Capelinhos Volcano
The Regional Secretariat for Natural Resources, through Faial Natural Park and with the support of several partner entities, promotes the organisation of a photography contest designated as "O Último Vulcão da Linha" (The Last Volcano of the Line).
The contest will be presented at 7 PM at the Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre, where a "tertúlia" (gathering/debate) will be held under the theme "Vulcão dos Capelinhos - 56 anos de inspiração" (Capelinhos Volcano - 56 years of inspiration). This event will be open to the public and will feature the participation of Nuno Sá, who will deliver a paper on the theme “Fotografar a Natureza – Uma ferramenta para a educação ambiental” (Photographing Nature - A tool for environmental education," and Paulo Silva, who will address the theme "Sentir e Interpretar o Ambiente nos Açores" (Feeling and Interpreting the Environment in the Azores).
Furthermore, the initiative will also feature the participation of Carlos Lobão, with a paper on the theme "Uma Geração entre dois Desafios – Abalar para a felicidade ou ficar no desafio da ilha” (A Generation between two Challenges - Depart to happiness or stand in the challenge of the island), and Andrea Porteiro, who will address the theme " “A Evolução da Paisagem do Vulcão dos Capelinhos” (The Evolution of the Landscape of Capelinhos Volcano).
The photography contest aims to encourage, recognise and reward creativity in the field of photography as well as to reveal news photographic perspectives of the Capelinhos Volcano.
Those who are interested in participating may enter the contest by presenting a maximum of three photographs on the Capelinhos Volcano.
The application period runs from October 24 to November 12. The rules and respective documents can be downloaded at the electronic address: http://parquesnaturais.azores.gov.pt/faial or requested at any service of Faial Natural Park, including the Botanical Garden, the Dabney House or the Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre.
With this initiative, Faial Natural Park intends to revive the memory of the population and raise their awareness for acknowledging the volcano's natural and historical importance as well as for the need to preserve this unique landscape that has emerged as a result of 13 months of volcanic activity, from September 27, 1957 to October 24, 1958.
The Capelinhos Volcano is the last cone of an alignment of cones that stretches from the central Caldeira of Faial to the tip of Capelinhos. It is a site of considerable importance in terms of geological, biological and heritage value, having been classified in the IUCN categories: Protected Area for the Management of Habitats or Species, Protected Landscape Area and Protected Resource Management Area.
