The new Natural Reserve of Pico Mountain came into force Sunday with the aim to enhance the safety of visitors and raise awareness for the conservation and promotion of natural heritage.
In this context, the Regional Government decided to extend the operating hours of "Casa da Montanha" (Mountain House), providing a new online booking platform and the redefinition of access fees.
Between May 1-31 and October 1-15, the "Casa da Montanha" will operate continuously from Friday 8 AM to Sunday 8 PM. On the remaining days, it will be open for 8 AM to 8 PM.
From June 1 to September 30, the "Casa da Montanha" will operate 24/7, while, from October 16 to April 30, it will be open every day between 8 AM and 6 PM.
In addition to the "Casa da Montanha," visitors may also obtain the necessary climbing authorisation at Pico Natural Park in person, at the headquarters of Madalena Fire Department or through the form available at the address http://servicos-sraa.azores.gov.pt/gamp.
The access to the Mountain can be done independently or through guides provided by tourist entertainment companies, travel agencies or tourist developments duly recognised by the governmental departments that oversee the areas of Tourism and Environment.
The access fees, which are in accordance with the goals for conservation, security and types of climbing, will now vary and there will be special conditions for the holders of "Park Friend" cards as well as for the companies joining the "Partner for Sustainable Development" programme.
In each climbing, visitors receive a tracking device (GPS) and they will also be provided information on the rules, conditions and average length of the trail, behaviour and safety rules, weather forecasts, and even the terms and conditions of rescue operations.
Further information on the new rules, schedules, contacts and access fees can be found at the address http://parquesnaturais.azores.gov.pt in the area of Pico Natural Park.
