The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Forestry revealed that, in view of the COVID-19 pandemic situation in the Region, it was decided, at a meeting with the President of the Azores Agricultural Federation, Jorge Rita, to cancel all agricultural events in the archipelago.
This decision, made Thursday at a meeting held via Skype, covers events that would be promoted by the Regional Government in collaboration of producers' organisations and those that would be promoted by producers' organisations with the Regional Government's support.
It includes events such as the Azores Agricultural Fair, which would take place on São Miguel Island between June 12 and 14, but also agricultural fairs held on the different islands as well as the celebrations of the National Agricultural Day organised by the São Miguel Agricultural Association.
“In view of the situation we are experiencing in the COVID-19 pandemic, it was agreed that the conditions were not in place to promote the agricultural events as they usually congregate a large number of people, which is totally discouraged by the Regional Health Authority,” said João Ponte.
