Regional Government improves services provided at Topo Agricultural Service Station on São Jorge Island
The Regional Secretariat of Agriculture and Forestry informs that Topo Agricultural Service Station on São Jorge Island will extend its daily operating hours, as in accordance with the commitment taken by the Azorean Government.
This station operates in the São Jorge Agrarian Development Services building in the hamlet of Alqueve, village of Topo. It is open from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM and from 1:30 to 4:30 PM.
The Topo Station mainly covers farmers in the villages of Topo and Santo Antão, an area where about 25% of the island's cattle population is located. It is at a distance of 30 kilometres from the nearest station, located in Relvinha.
In these two villages, there are about two hundred cattle farms, most of which dedicated to milk production.
At this time of the year when there are many bovine births, the Topo station registers an average of 100 weekly attendances.
On the island of São Jorge, there are agricultural service stations operating in the villages of Urzelina, Relvinha and Topo.
Agricultural service stations provide technical support to carry out administrative tasks to which farmers are legally obliged, such as movement records (purchase, sale, slaughter, birth and death of animals) and the issuance of animal transport guides.
Moreover, farmers also have the possibility to submit all kinds of applications, for example, to the Support Programme for Agricultural and Forest Modernisation (PROAMAF), create the identification of beneficiaries, update land parcels and issue passports for animals.
Currently, there are more than forty agricultural service stations operating in the Azores.
