The Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and the Environment, through the Regional Directorate for the Environment, has authorised the launch of the tender for the sealing of Faial landfill, amounting to 773 thousand Euros.
Included in the Regional Public Works Charter, this contract work has a completion period of 210 days and falls within the political choices of the Regional Government in waste management.
With the construction and operation of processing centres on seven of the nine islands, the aim is to reduce the deposition of waste to a minimum as well as to carry out sealing and environmental rehabilitation interventions in the existing open dumps.
In this regard, the landfills on Graciosa and Flores have already been sealed and the contract works for the sealing of the landfills on the islands of Santa Maria and Corvo; an inert landfill will be built on the latter island.
The Government of the Azores will launch a tender later this year for the sealing of the two landfills on São Jorge Island.
By 2020, the Region aims to prepare, at least, 50% of municipal waste for reuse and recycling.
