Regional Government supports international meeting on Eurasian woodcock and Magellan snipe on Pico
The Government of the Azores, through the Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and Forestry, supports the holding of an international meeting dedicated to Eurasian woodcock and Magellan snipe that includes participation of more than 30 researchers. It will take place on the island of Pico between May 9 and 11.
Promoted by WSSG - Woodcock and Snipe Specialist Group, this technical-scientific meeting intended to discuss and encourage knowledge on both species will be held at Madalena Municipal Auditorium. The opening session will be attended by João Ponte.
The initiative will bring together Portuguese, French, English and Canadian researchers, among other nationalities. It will be held for the first time in Azores, after having taken place in Russia in 2011.
There are eight woodcock species (Scolopax genus) and 18 snipe species (Gallinago e Lymnocryptes genera) identified worldwide, some of which in inhabit the archipelago of the Azores.
As they are game species, it is important to ensure the sustainable use of their populations. In this regard, the researchers of the University of the Azores have collaborated with the Regional Directorate for Forest Resources in the study of the Azorean woodcock and snipe populations.
