Regional Secretariat for Natural Resources allocates 40 thousand Euros to Azores Geopark
The Regional Secretariat for Natural Resources signed today in Horta a cooperation protocol with Azores Geopark, which became part of the Global and European Geoparks Network in March as the 53rd European Geopark.
"With the allocation of a financial support in the amount of 40 thousand Euros, this association will be able to develop this year various projects and actions with the aim of promoting and raising awareness for the environment and natural heritage in the context of its inclusion in the European Geoparks Network," stated the Regional Secretary for Natural Resources.
For Luís Neto Viveiros, "the Azores Geopark is, undoubtedly, an innovative geopark at a global level," being "the first archipelago" to be included in the European Geoparks Network, an initiative promoted by UNESCO.
The Regional Secretary stressed that the inclusion of the Geopark "acknowledges the archipelago of the Azores as a region of quality and excellence that is guided by the internationally recognised principles of rigorousness and prestige."
"This brand reinforces the relevance of the unique geodiversity and geological heritage of the Azores, which are now placed at the service of a strategy for the sustainable development of local communities."
Luís Neto Viveiros explained that this strategy is based on Geotourism and Nature Tourism and aims to promote economic growth of territories based on the respect for their environmental values.
The Regional Secretary for Natural Resources also praised the work developed by the Azores Geopark Association in "close cooperation" with the Government in the inventorying, description and recovery of the Region's natural heritage; the development of geotourism and local products; the creation of "geoproducts" and the promotion of environmental education for locals and visitors as well.
