The Government of the Azores, through the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and the Sea, has developed a series of actions under the implementation of the Land Management Plan of the Furnas Crater Lake Hydrographic Basin to improve the lake's water quality.
In addition to making the activities compatible with the environmental protection and enhancement of the Furnas hydrographic basin and improving water quality, this initiative also aims to safeguard the sustainability of income, diversify and consolidate local economy, and promote local values.
The São Miguel Natural Park, as managing unit of this protected areas, will organise a field trip to a recovered orchard in Furnas on January 28 (Saturday) at 10 AM.
This field trip intends to promote local values as well as to raise the awareness of people through various initiatives that will be organised to recover the orchard. It is also an opportunity to get feedback from participants, exchange ideas and debate some of the problems that local producers face.
The event is followed by an outdoor lecture on the history and tradition of Azorean crops, focusing on the recovery of old apple tree varieties.
After the lecture, those who are interested may visit an exhibition at the Furnas Monitoring and Research Centre with guided tour included.
The meeting point will be at the Furnas Lake car par (behind the hot springs).
