Use of substances with glyphosate is highly regulated and monitored, assures Neto Viveiros

The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and the Environment stated in Horta that the use of agrochemicals with glyphosate for agricultural purposes and the eradication of invasive plant species in the recovery of habitats by official departments or by non-governmental organisations is highly regulated and monitored, both in terms of use and sales.

"In addition to the strict compliance with all indications issued by the European Agency for Food Safety and all rules for the use of agrochemicals, the Government has also implemented a series of measures intended to ensure the proper use of these products," said Luís Neto Viveiros.

The Regional Secretary spoke at the Legislative Assembly during a debate on the use of this substance, stressing that, being a chemical, its use is not free.  The sales of this product lack     approval by international entities, which is subject to extremely rigorous tests.

The Secretary for Agriculture and Environment also highlighted the Government's commitment to providing free training sessions for the proper use of plant protection products with this and other components as well as its attention to international studies that are being developed.

"They are 3,000 licensed farmers," said Neto Viveiros, in addition to other applicators belonging to local authorities and companies.

With the correct use of these products, which do not have a more efficient and feasible alternative to date, the Regional Secretary stated that known risks "are safeguarded," provided that  the exact quantities and intervals of time are respected.

Luís Neto Viveiros also pointed out that the inspection actions are conducted by various entities, from official Agriculture and Environment departments to GNR (National Republican Guard).
