Securing more stability and better income in employment is everyone's responsibility, defends Berto Messias
The Regional Assistant Secretary of the Presidency for Parliamentary Affairs stated today that "strengthening and increasing the social value of labour while securing more stability and better income in employment is everyone's responsibility: not only public entities but also economic and social partners."
Berto Messias spoke at the Legislative Assembly in Horta following the political declaration of PS on the stability and improvement of working conditions in the tourism sector. On the occasion, he reiterated the call launched by the President of the Government at the solemn session of the Region's Day, namely that "entities representing the sector, employers and workers should strengthen dialogue and undertake a concerted action towards increased employability in this area."
"The quality of employment is one of the most important challenges we have in the medium term. In this context, stability, the reduction of labour precariousness and better income for workers are fundamental and should be everyone's priority," said the government official.
"We will only achieve true success in any economic sector when the results and income generated by this sector are evenly distributed among employers, but, above all, among workers," added Berto Messias.
According to the Regional Secretary, "there is absolutely no doubt about the positive evolution" in the economic activity of the Region, "where tourism plays an important role." This evolution is evidenced in "several indicators provided by numerous reputed external entities."
"In addition to all the benefits and positive consequences that we have managed to obtain from the economic dynamics in tourism, we are not satisfied with the fact that there is more employment. We want better jobs and better income, more stability and less precariousness," said the government official.
Berto Messias emphasised that the Regional Government has "worked thoroughly towards the development of strategies to foster and support the creation of employment as well as the protection of employment." In this regard, he recalled the decisions taken by the extraordinary Council of Government on employment in November last year, "which are in force and producing positive results."
The Regional Secretary also highlighted the "work undertaken by the Vice-Presidency of the Government in the Regional Public Administration to reduce precariousness, guarantee stability and reduce fixed-term contracts, ensuring the inclusion of workers in these conditions. This process is currently underway and yielding good results."
"The path we have followed, the success we have achieved and the challenges we still have to overcome are part of a work that can only be done in partnership with the Government of the Azores, entrepreneurs, workers and their representatives. Better employment, more job stability and better income should be everyone's concerns," said Berto Messias.
