Euroschool is important tool to engage young Azoreans in the European project

The Regional Director for European Affairs highlighted in Horta the "key role" of Euroschool contest in promoting the involvement of young Azoreans in the European project.

Célia Azevedo spoke Monday at the regional session of a contest in which young people are called to reflect and present their ideas on the European project. She stressed the "high quality" of the works presented by the students attending Vila Franca do Campo and Ribeira Grande Vocational Training Schools, S. Roque do Pico and Padre Manuel Azevedo da Cunha Basic and Secondary Schools, Antero de Quental and Manuel de Arriaga Secondary Schools; the latter won the regional phase of Euroschool.

For the Regional Director, this contest is particularly important as it will "make young people better acquainted with the functioning of European institutions, raising awareness for their status as European citizens and preparing them to be more responsible and active citizens at regional, national and European level.

In turn, the Regional Director for Youth, Lúcio Rodrigues, who also attended the meeting at the Legislative Assembly, stated that Euroschool "provides a platform where young people, in this case Azoreans, may express their personal opinions and value their involvement in the European project; this is particularly important these days."

Students André Costa and Júlia Branco, Manuel de Arriaga Secondary School, will represent the Azores in the national phase of Euroschool to take place at the National Assembly in Lisbon on May 8 and 9.

These sessions will select the national winners to represent Portugal at the Euroschool final. It will be held at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, involving the participation of about 500 young people in each session. They will represent schools from several Member States of the European Union.

In the Azores, the contest is organised by the Regional Directorate for Youth in conjunction with the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

The 2016/2017 edition of Euroschool is held under the title "Reinventing Europe."
