Government of the Azores celebrates International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
The Government of the Azores celebrates the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on Friday with an initiative that will bring together all elementary school students from Faial.
This initiative is organised by the Cabinet of the Regional Secretary of the Presidency for External Relations, through the Regional Directorate for Communities. It will involve the participation of 700 elementary school students with the aim of raising the awareness of children for the importance of cultural convergence, through a moment of learning and socialisation.
Organised in partnership with the Horta City Hall and Horta Basic Education School, the celebration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination aims to stimulate the imagination and creativity of youngsters for the contact with different cultural realities and promote the importance of diversity and interculturalism in contemporary societies.
The programme of the event, which will take place at Teatro Faialense, features the participation of immigrants from Brazil, Cape Verde and Russia, who will present a traditional tale from their country. The activities also include the screening of a DVD "Contos de Lá" (Tales from Abroad) and a theatre play on immigration and cultural diversity.
Established by the United Nations, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is celebrated on March 21, as a reference to Sharpeville massacre that occurred in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1960.
