Contest “Conquering the Azores” – First Edition
The Regional Department for the Communities from the Presidency of the Regional Government organized the literary contest “Conquering the Azores” for young people residing in the communities and aiming at the preservation of Azorean cultural identity.
The three winners were awarded with a prize trip to four islands of the archipelago of the Azores, where they participated in several visits.
Ana Cristina Martins (23 years old), from Rio de Janeiro presented an essay named “Antero de Quental – Revolucionário Político e Poeta assentado entre formas incompletas”;
Fabiano dos Santos (24 years old), from Santa Catarina with the essay “A Arquitectura dos Impérios do Espírito Santo no Brasil Meridional: Herança Cultural Açoriana”;
Franco Silva (20 years old) from Santa Catarina presented a tale named “O Conto de Lá para Cá”.
The trip began on July 28, on the islands of Faial and Pico, and on July 31 on Terceira Island. They met youngsters, children of Azorean emigrants living in the United States and Canada, who were attending the workshop “Youth Meetings-2004” (an initiative of the Regional Department of the Communities). They went to São Miguel Island on August 2 and visited several institutions, such as the University of the Azores, the Regional Department for Science and Technology and some local firms.
