The Regional Department for the Communities from the Presidency of the Regional Government of the Azores organized the event “Brazil Week” which took place between April 24 and 30, 2004 on the islands of S. Miguel, Faial, Pico and Terceira. This event is included in the actions developed abroad by the Regional Department for the Communities and in the divulgation of the historical and cultural bonds that join the Azores and the South of Brazil.
The objectives of this initiative were to show to the Azorean society the work developed in Brazil, at a cultural and academic level, as well as in the areas of history, music, visual arts and handicrafts.
Several representatives of different areas attended this event: Ivo Ladislau and his Music Band, from Rio Grande do Sul, Jorge Coelho and Marcos Rocha from Santa Catarina; Vera Barroso, a historian from Rio Grande do Sul, with the lecture “The Historic Connection between the Azores and the South of Brazil” and Jone Cézar Araújo from Santa Catarina with the topic “The Azorean Culture Contribution to Popular Art of Meridian Brazil – State of Santa Catarina”. There was also an handicrafts display with the presence of two lace-makers from Santa Catarina, with “bilro” and “crivo” (laceworks), as well as a painting display by the artist Vera Sabino and a photography display by Joi Alves.
This event took place in Ponta Delgada, S. Miguel Island, on April 24 at Luis de Camões Auditorium; in Horta, Faial Island, on April 25 and 26 at Centro do Mar, Porto Pim; on Pico Island on April 27 and 28 at Lajes do Pico Auditorium; and on Terceira Island on April 29 and 30 at Angra do Heroísmo Cultural and Conferences Auditorium.
The program consisted of displays, handicrafts, lectures and a musical presentation. The admission to this event was free admission.
