2003 – Festival of Azorean Culture
The Festival of Azorean Culture in Vancouver on July 14 to 19, 2003 was an initiative of some local organizations in partnership with the Regional Department for the Communities, which considered its own participation as a way of the Regional Government of the Azores saying “We are here with you”.
This festival included music, a book release, a local Gastronomy Fair, handicrafts exhibitions, theatre, poetry, and represented an encouragement to the celebration of the Azorean way of life and to the transmission of this patrimony to the younger generations.
The Director of the Regional Department for the Communities pointed out, once more, the adopted politics on the organization of this type of event and its importance: “The communities which are geographically distant are as close to our hearts as those which are only a few hours away. We want the Azoreans living in Vancouver to feel as if they were in the Azores when listening to the music, the poetry, the theatre and the voices brought here.”
