2000 – Politicians Meeting
The Presidency of the Regional Government of the Azores, through the Regional Department for the Communities, organized on S. Miguel Island, between July 6 and 9, 2000, a meeting with about 30 state politicians, Portuguese-descendants and Americans, whose work is related with the reception of the Azorean communities abroad.
The participants were State Senators and members of the Representative Chamber of the States of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, as well as individuals from public services and two Portuguese Consuls in Boston and New Bedford.
The main objective of this event was to shorten the relationship between the authorities of regions with a strong Azorean presence.
The peak of the program, which included visits to different places on the island, as well as to the University of the Azores and the Public Library in Ponta Delgada, was the discussion of the subject “The Azores in the Bilateral Relationship Portugal – United States of America”, where the repatriation issue was also referred. This meeting was attended by the President of the Regional Government of the Azores, the Regional Secretary of Education and Social Affairs, the Secretary of Economy and by the Regional Director for the Communities.
