Ponta Delgada ,  July 05, 2013

Ana Luís Rego and Rodrigo Oliveira to represent the Region in the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of Azorean presence in Uruguay

The President of the Legislative Assembly of the Azores, Ana Luís, and the Regional Under Secretary of the Presidency for External Relations, Rodrigo Oliveira, will participate in the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the city of San Carlos and the Azorean presence in Uruguay. The events will take place on July 7 and 8.

The settlement of San Carlos was established in 1763. Among the first settlers, there were a hundred and fifty Azorean families from the islands of Faial, Pico, São Jorge and Terceira.

The legacy of Azorean settlers is still alive in many aspects of the city's life and culture due to the efforts undertaken by the Association Los Azorenos/House of the Azores of Uruguay and other institutions from San Carlos and other places in this South American country.

The celebration programme includes a solemn session at the National Parliament of Uruguay to take place on July 8. The session will be attended by national and local dignitaries.

The day before, July 7, will be celebrated with the unveiling of a plaque at Praça dos Açores as well as with several ceremonies and cultural initiatives promoted by the House of the Azores of Uruguay, the San Carlos Municipality and the local Historical Research Centre.

The celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the city is of great importance for the San Carlos community as they are closely linked to the role and legacy of Azorean settlers, whose importance was highlighted by Uruguayan authorities and institutions taking part in the celebration programme.
