The Government of the Azores promotes the First Regional Literary Contest - Narratives about Europe. Participants will be challenged to write an unpublished tale on the theme "Young People, Europe, the Future," which will be later adapted to dramatic text and staged by a theatre group.
Promoted by the Offices of the Regional Secretaries of the Presidency for External Relations and Parliamentary Affairs, this initiative is addressed at young people residing in the archipelago, members of regional youth associations or students enrolled at the University of the Azores aged between 18 and 25 as of May 9, 2019.
The contest takes place under the "European Citizenship - Europe for Azoreans" programme and the Europe Day celebrations to take be held on May 9. It aims to raise young people's interest in the studying European issues, promote active citizenship and to create or consolidate writing habits, thus encouraging the knowledge on European affairs through youth-oriented actions designed to strengthen writing habits and the interest in Europe.
Besides winning a trip to Brussels and a book, the winner will have his work adapted to a dramatic text that will be later staged by a regional theatre group,
The 2nd place winner will win a sea trip to an island of the archipelago of his/her choice with the possibility of staying at the Youth Hostels of Ponta Delgada, Santa Maria, São Jorge, Pico or Terceira, in addition to receiving an Interjovem Card valid for one year.
The 3rd place winner will receive an Interjovem Card valid for one year.
The works in competition, which may be presented individually or collectively (two-person teams), must be submitted by May 9 at the email [email protected].
Each participant can only submit one paper that complies with the following requirements: a minimum of seven pages and a maximum of 15 A4 size pages (without illustrations), 1.5 line spacing and Times New Roman 12 font. The work should address the expectations regarding the future of Europe as well as to one or more of the following topics: European Union history, European values and/or a reflection on the current situation.
The jury will be composed of a literature teacher, a writer, a theatre specialist and members of the Offices of the Regional Assistant Secretaries of the Presidency for External Relations and Parliamentary Affairs.
The works will be evaluated based on creativity and innovation in addressing the theme, literary quality, organization and coherence of the text, and the pertinence of contents.
